RALEIGH — The owner of five Triangle newspapers says it will shut them down on August 1.
Civitas Media, based in Davidson north of Charlotte, says it will stop publishing the Apex Herald, the Cleveland Post, the Fuquay-Varina Independent, the Garner News and the Holly Springs Sun.
In a statement, Civitas Media CEO, Michael Bush, said the papers are being closed because they are suburban and dont fit into the companys business model that focuses on rural communities. Civitas Media owns 53 weekly and 35 daily publications in 11 states.
The company is also shutting down three papers in suburban Dayton, Ohio. The 12 employees affected by the shut downs are being offered jobs elsewhere in the company, Bush said.
The five Triangle communities will still have newspaper coverage from The News & Observers Garner-Cleveland Record and Southwest Wake News.
