Daniel Coleman: Drug test government employees

July 18, 2013

Drug tests for all

As an officer in the United States Navy, I was subject to random drug testing as were all other members of the service. Our state officials have taken a different tack: They are drug testing only one economic class of citizens.

If the goal is to make sure that those getting government funds are drug-free then the testing program should encompass all of those getting a government check. The speaker of the house should be tested with the same frequency as the potential recipient of state assistance.

It is time to stop treating the poor as a lower class. If a member of the legislature is on drugs, he certainly represents a greater risk to the public than if a welfare recipient is on drugs.
