Memory F. Mitchell: Short-term smiles

Short-term smiles

My heart was overjoyed to see the smiling faces of Gov. Pat McCrory, House Speaker Thom Tillis, Senate President pro tem Phil Berger and Secretary of Commerce Sharon Decker staring at me on the July 16 front page! Everything must be fine and dandy for North Carolina and its citizens.

My joy turned to dismay and distress when I read the article “GOP agrees on state tax plan” and learned that the cause for those happy expressions included a decrease of $500 million in revenue for state government services in the next two years and for even larger losses in the years to come – up to $2.4 billion in five years. What a nightmare!

Will those faces still have happy smiles after the next election?
