Laura Hinkle is an upbeat, fit mom who works in banking in Raleigh. Since her divorce, she’s socializing more but worries her look doesn’t hit the right note. “Please help me with how I ‘should’ look,” she wrote in email. “I’m 54 and have younger friends that think I should dress younger. I thankfully have a figure that can wear younger styles but struggle with the ‘If you wore it once, you shouldn’t be wearing it again!’” At Magpie Boutique in Durham, I showed her casual and dressy looks that are age-appropriate, suit her figure and say, “Yes, I’m pretty fabulous.”

Boring before: This outfit doesn’t do Hinkle justice; it looks heavy and dull. Black is harsh for her skin and hair color, and it looks like something someone 30 years older would wear. The pants don’t fit well.

After hair: Glam Lounge used a rich light brown base color to cover grays and complement Hinkle’s skin tone, while honey-blonde highlights added dimension. Her hair was layered to create a subtle angle – slightly shorter in the back and longer in the front – to create a nice profile without being too trendy. A side-swept bang adds a modern touch.

Makeup: Tinted moisturizer gives sheer coverage to Hinkle’s clear skin. Eyeliner, along with tan, taupe, and brown shadows, accentuates her eyes. Powder blush was used for color and contouring, followed by a burgundy brown lip color. A highlighter cream on the cheekbones gave her a dewy glow.

After fancy denim and tee: Jeans and a top look elegant when the pieces are well chosen. The Daniel Rainn silk top is soft and feminine because of its intricate detailing and flattering fit; it also shows off Hinkle’s toned arms. The Paige Denim jeans give her a long leg line, which is continued with Bacio wedges that add a modern edge and personality. The Hobo bag adds a punch of unexpected color and is practical. The Karin Sultan cuff and earrings are delicate and beautiful, which matches Hinkle’s look. The Red Resin bracelet is a pretty conversation starter.

After dress: This Eva Franco dress is a great go-to because it suits so many occasions. It is age-appropriate, and the floaty fabric gives it a little romance, too. The Cavage patent heels accent Hinkle’s great legs. The metallic clutch adds sparkle to the neutrals. The Zia onyx and red jade necklace frames her face nicely.

The reaction: Thanks to Glam Lounge for providing free hairstyling and makeup. “The girls were so sweet and they treated me so well,” Hinkle said. She likes her modern cut and picked up some makeup tips for her nights out. Hinkle loved how the jeans flatter her figure and has a new appreciation for designer denim.
