Man dies in Durham after police find him shot multiple times

From staff reportsJuly 23, 2013

— Police found Travis Knight, 41, of Durham, fatally wounded when they responded to a call about gunshots on East Umstead Street on Monday night, they said Tuesday.

Knight had been shot several times, police said, and died at Duke University Hospital shortly after officers found him.

Police said they had no suspects in the case early Tuesday and had not determined why Knight, who lived on Armitage Drive, near Falls Lake, was shot or why he was in the 300 block of East Umstead.

The report of gunshots came at 9:09 p.m., police said.

There had been 15 homicides in Durham by mid-July, outpacing 2012, where there were 21 for the year.

The average annual homicide rate for the past five years has been 24, police have said.

Frustration with the current frequency of killings was a topic raised by audience members at a meeting last week of the Durham Crime Cabinet, a group of city and county law enforcement officials.
