Joe Moran: Protests about fairness

July 24, 2013

Focus is fairness

Regarding the July 16 article “GOP supporters to gather for ‘Thankful Tuesday’ ”: When Francis De Luca, head of the conservative Civitas Institute stated, “It’s hard to get excited when people are claiming it’s about morality. ... It’s about money. It’s a stunt,” he missed the key argument of the residents who are assembling at the state legislature each Monday. It is precisely the connection between money and morality that has so many North Carolinians concerned. And it comes down to the principle that you don’t balance budgets at the expense of the poorest and most vulnerable of our communities.

The failure to perceive how ingrained this basic value of “fairness” is to all people of good will in our Tar Heel State – and how our deepest sense of morality dictates that we give preferential treatment to the poor in our midst – is unsettling.
