RALEIGH — Police charged a 30-year-old man Thursday with rape and several counts of sex offense involving a child under 13 years old.
Alfredo Leon Palma was arrested at his home at 4308 Redtail Court in Raleigh shortly after midnight, records show.
He was being held Thursday in lieu of $2.5 million bail on one count of first-degree rape, three counts of first-degree sex offense with a child and one count of attempted first-degree sex offense with a child.
Arrest warrants said the incidents occurred during the two years between Jan. 1, 2008, and Dec. 31, 2009.
Police say that it is not uncommon for child victims in sex-offense cases to wait long periods before they are able to tell someone what happened.
Palma and the victim knew each other before the incidents happened, police spokeswoman Laura Hourigan said.
According a detainer request filed by federal authorities, Palma, from Mexico, had been deported from the U.S., re-entered illegally, has at least three convictions in the U.S. for misdemeanor-level crimes and is considered a risk to national security, border security or public safety.
The form does not say when Palma was deported.
