PITTSBORO — Chatham County sheriffs deputies have filed charges against a 15-year-old boy accused of shooting at cars with a pellet gun.
Deputies got a call about 7:30 p.m. Monday regarding damage to property in the area of U.S. 15-501 North and Hamlets Chapel Church Road, north of Pittsboro.
They found two vehicles damaged by gunshots. A third party contacted the Sheriffs Office after arriving home to report the same type of incident. All three vehicles were traveling north on the highway at the time someone shot at them. No one was injured.
Deputies began searching the wood line for a suspect and went door to door looking for any witnesses. They got a tip that a neighborhood teenage boy had often been seen in the area with a pellet gun. This led the investigation to a nearby home.
Following the investigation, investigators identified a 15-year-old suspect and recovered a CO2 gas-powered pellet rifle they think was used in the incident. The juvenile was placed into secured custody pending hearings in the matter. Petitions for criminal charges have been filed with the N.C. Department of Juvenile Justice.
Damages to the vehicles included penetration holes in the side panels and broken window glass.
