Raleigh police search for driver in fatal hit-and-run

From staff reportsAugust 4, 2013

— Police are looking for a vehicle that struck a man east of downtown Saturday night. The man later died.

Someone called police at about 9:45 p.m. to report that a pedestrian had been hit on Pettigrew Street, near the convergence of New Bern Avenue and East Edenton Street.

Police found Dwight Emory Smith in the street. They think Smith, 26, had been lying on the pavement when he was struck by a vehicle that then drove off.

Smith was taken to WakeMed, where he died.

Police ask anyone with information that might help them locate the vehicle or its driver to either call Raleigh CrimeStoppers at 919-834-4357 or to go to the CrimeStoppers Web site at www.raleighcrimestoppers.org for instructions on how to report a tip online or by text message.
