GASTONIA — A 911 call placed by employees at a Gastonia Hotel provided more details about the case of a woman accused of leaving her mentally handicapped daughter chained in a hotel room while she attended a wedding.
Concerned guests contacted the hotel staff at the Courtyard Marriott on Remount Road after seeing the 19-year-old roaming the halls on Saturday, according to the 911 call. A man who identified himself as the hotels general manager told a dispatcher that the girl could only answer yes to simple questions, but was able to lead him to the room where she was staying. The teen has the mental capacity of a 3-year-old, according to WCNC-TV, the Observers news partner.
I took her back to the room and oh my God, there is a leash and handcuff on the floor, the man said. And it is my belief that they left this child here alone.
Police said they discovered the chain protruding from underneath a mattress. Police believe the girls ankle had been handcuffed to the bed, but she was able to manipulate the chain and leave the room.
When the girls mother, Tiffany Michelle Davis, of Pasadena, Md., returned to the hotel Saturday she admitted to leaving her daughter, police said.
Davis was in Gaston County jail Monday, charged with neglecting a disabled person. Her bond had been set at $200,000.
