Two people struck on Guess Road in Durham

From staff reportsAugust 5, 2013

— Two people were struck and one of them killed on Guess Road in North Durham early Monday afternoon, according to the State Highway Patrol.

Brian Gene Long was walking in the southbound lane of Guess Road when he was hit from behind by a Jeep Grand Cherokee at about 12:15 p.m. Long, 30, died before he could be taken to the hospital.

Another pedestrian who was walking along the shoulder, Kristen McLaughlin, was also hit, but her injuries were not considered life threatening. Both Long and McLaughlin lived on nearby Genesee Road.

The Jeep was driven by Elizabeth Ekberg, 22, of South Lowell Road in Bahama. State Highway Patrol spokesman 1st Sgt. Jeff Gordon said it’s not clear if Ekberg will be charged.

“Upon completion of the investigation, the Highway Patrol will confer with the Durham County District Attorney’s Office with its findings,” Gordon said.

The accident forced authorities to close Guess Road between Bramble Drive and Latta Road for several hours Monday.
