Lowland Hum, a folk-rock duo from Greensboro, play the Carrboro ArtsCenter on Saturday.

  • Other highlights

    • It’s a great weekend for guitar heroics, between six-string deity Cool John Ferguson at Raleigh’s Southland Ballroom Friday and Cajun blues-rock master Sonny Landreth at Durham’s Papa Mojo’s on Sunday; going back to Friday, Carrboro’s Cat’s Cradle has a good hip-hop bill headlined by El-P, while the local ensemble Jack the Radio shows off its new live album/DVD at Raleigh’s Pour House; New Town Drunks do likewise with their new album at Durham’s Pinhook on Saturday, the same night controversial funnyman pundit Bill Maher holds forth at Durham Performing Arts Center and Sauce Boss is at Papa Mojo’s; garage-rockers Royal Bangs play Kings in Raleigh on Monday; and pop star Ke$ha does her thing at Raleigh’s Red Hat Amphitheater on Wednesday, with Duke alumnus Mike Posner opening.

Lowland Hum, the folk-rock duo of Daniel and Lauren Goans, is from Greensboro. But based on the group’s new album “Native Air,” you’d swear they came from a misty European mountain range, because these 14 tracks have a decidedly Old World feel. Stately, spare and elegant, the arrangements leave plenty of room for the Goans’ yearning vocal harmonies, with the lyrics offering up recurrent images of solitary emptiness. You can experience it live Saturday, when Lowland Hum opens for the similarly lovely Birds & Arrows at the Carrboro ArtsCenter.

Showtime is 8 p.m. and admission is $10 ($14 day of show). See for details.
