Police: Resident kills armed intruder in Wolf Creek apartments

From staff reportsAugust 10, 2013

— A tenant in a student apartment complex in West Raleigh shot and killed an armed intruder early Saturday, police said.

Vincent Reed Bellamy, 23, told police the intruder broke into his apartment and held a handgun to his face. Bellamy was able to retrieve his own handgun and shot the man, who was identified as Trevor Anders Herne, 35.

Bellamy then activated a fire alarm in the building, possibly to attract help. Bellamy’s roommate was awakened by the alarm and found Herne’s body in the hallway. Thinking it was Bellamy, the roommate called police. Herne was dead when officers arrived.

The incident happened shortly before 2 a.m. at the Wolf Creek apartment complex, which provides student housing for schools including N.C. State University, Meredith College and Shaw University.

No charges have been filed, police said Saturday evening.
