The Bible is right. And so is Charlie Brown.
A study from scientists at UNC-Chapel Hill and UCLA shows that were better off, in terms of our own health and happiness, doing things for other people than we are from doing things for ourselves. Its all about the types of cells happiness produces in our immune systems. Now, a massage (or even a really good piece of pizza) can give us that warm feeling of satisfaction. But the cells produced cells in the immune system that responded as if they were under stress.
But, when we get a good feeling from doing a favor such as working in a soup kitchen or just doing a good deed for a neighbor, everything is positive in the ol immune system cell department. Those cells are better. As the scientists put it, hedonistic happiness is not as good for you as altruistic happiness.
Thus, its shown that the Gospel of Luke, Do to others as you would have them do to you was on the money, and so was Charlie Brown, when he found the little red-haired girls pencil and vowed to return it. Youre a good man, Charlie Brown. And a happy one.
