Speeches earn honors at Lakewood Middle School

Students from Lakewood Middle School in Durham were honored for their public speaking skills in the Modern Woodmen’s School Speech Contest.

The top three finishers in the school-level contest were seventh-grader Cordelia Gilligan in first place, seventh-grader Sarah Staehle in second place and eighth-grader Jackie Keul in third. Each received a trophy, and their names were engraved on a contest plaque. Gold award pins went to the rest of the finalists: Katie Baxter, Javier Aguilar, Julio Almos, Leo Rangel-Jimenez, Eric Wennerstrom and Katja Weber.

The topic of this year’s contest was “A Person Who Has Overcome.”
