Wake deputies join witness to nab suspects in Raleigh

From staff reportsAugust 14, 2013

— Wake County sheriff’s deputies held Justin Thomas Bassett and Shawn Benjamin Carrow for Raleigh police, who charged them with attempted robbery after a witness saw two men trying to wrestle a hand bag away from a 50-year-old woman in downtown Raleigh and chased them Tuesday evening.

Police said Bassett, 25, and Carrow, 28, were the ones who tried to get the bag away from the woman in the 200 block of West Hargett Street about 7 p.m.

The woman would not let go, and the witness said the men ran off when they realized he was chasing them, police spokesman Jim Sughrue explained.

The chase led east on Hargett and then south, through the News & Observer parking lot and onto East Martin Street by the Wake County Justice Center, police said.

Sheriff’s deputies at the center saw the men running and stopped them, Sughrue said, then turned them over to Raleigh police.

Bassett, of 3513 Wickersham Way in Raleigh, and Carrow, of 5244 Holly Ridge Farm Road in Raleigh, were each charged with one count of attempted robbery and one count of conspiracy to commit robbery.

Bail for each was set at $500,000, according to Wake County records, and they were held for court appearances Wednesday.

The woman told police the wallet and other items in her bag were worth about $200, arrest warrants said.
