RailHawks beat New York Cosmos 3-0

News ReleaseAugust 17, 2013

— The Carolina RailHawks defeated the New York Cosmos 3-0 at WakeMed Soccer Park on Friday night to extend their home record to 10-1-0 in 2013 NASL and U.S. Open Cup play.

The scoring began only eight minutes into the game when Tiyi Shipalane charged forward from midfield before connecting with Zack Schilawski outside of the Cosmos’ box. Schilawski then fed the ball to Brian Shriver, who one-touched the pass into the net to put the RailHawks ahead 1-0. The RailHawks added to their lead 20 minutes later when Cosmos defender Hunter Gorskie misplaced a back pass, allowing Shriver to take possession in the Cosmos’ box with only goalkeeper Kyle Reynish to beat. Shriver took a delicate touch around the keeper and slotted the ball into the open net.

Tempers flared throughout the game, leading to 23 fouls from Carolina and 20 from New York. The numerous cards accumulated to two ejections before the break at halftime, one for each side, as the Cosmos’ Joseph Nane was ejected for a foul and subsequent dissension, and the RailHawks’ Austin da Luz was ejected after receiving a second yellow card following a foul committed while contesting a header.

Though more space was available, it was the defenses that shined, as neither team offered many chances in the second half. Yet in the waning minutes of the game, Cesar Elizondo charged into the Cosmos’ box before being brought down by defender Hunter Gorskie for a penalty. Brian Ackley converted with ease, sending his shot into the top right corner. .
