Durham man killed when vehicle turns in front of his scooter

— A Durham man was killed Wednesday afternoon when a vehicle turned in front his scooter on University Drive near Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard.

Joshua Johnson, 33, of Durham was driving a scooter south on University Drive around 2 p.m. when a 1996 Dodge driven northbound by James Byrd, of Alpine Road, attempted to make a left turn onto Durham-Chapel Hill Boulevard. The scooter collided with the side of the Dodge, according to investigators.

Johnson was taken to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead a short time later. Byrd was not injured.
