Age-old issues

In his response to questions about high salaries for young state workers who worked on his campaign, Gov. Pat McCrory stated that he “can’t discriminate based on age” (“McCrory defends 2 state workers' pay,” Aug. 17).

According to the Age Discrimination and Employment Act and North Carolina law, age discrimination protections only exist to protect employees who are 40 years old and older.

So, McCrory can discriminate in regard to hiring younger workers.

McCrory also stated “he’d like teachers to make what TV anchors are paid.” I am a 47-year-old public school teacher with a master’s degree. TV anchors? I’d settle for making as much as his 26-year-old secretary!
