Kyle Busch sets Bristol benchmark with Truck win

— Regardless of whether Kyle Busch won Saturday night’s Sprint Cup Series race at Bristol Motor Speedway, the 28-year-old driver already made his mark in the track’s history.

Busch’s victory in Wednesday night’s Truck series was his 15th at Bristol in NASCAR’s three national series – Cup, Nationwide and Trucks. That broke a tie with Darrell Waltrip for the most national series win at Bristol.

Busch extended his record with his win in Friday’s Food City 250. Busch has five Cup wins, six Nationwide wins and four Truck wins at the high-speed oval. All but one of Waltrip’s victories came in Cup.

“I’m not exactly sure what makes me so good at Bristol. I’ve just had a lot of success there, but I’ve also had some misfortune there,” Busch said. “Ever since I got through my rookie year, I’ve just taken a liking to the place.

“It’s just a fun race track no matter what series I’m running there. You really have to be on your game because you make one mistake, or someone else makes one mistake, that’s it.”

There were no mistakes Friday night, as Busch led 228 of the 250 laps after starting from the pole. The only other driver to lead was rookie Kyle Larson.

Brad Keselowski finished second and Austin Dillon was third. Sam Hornish Jr. continues to lead the Nationwide Series standings and holds a six-point advantage over Dillon with 10 races remaining.

Busch attributes at least part of his success at Bristol to his success at other high-banked tracks early in his career.

“We grew up at the ‘Bullring’ (in Las Vegas) and stuff like that. They aren’t as banked as Bristol is, but I love going and racing at Winchester (Indiana) and at Slinger (Wisconsin), Salem (Indiana) – those are all really high-banked race tracks that are a 1/2-mile in distance, or a quarter,” Busch said.

“They’re really fun to race around and you kind of get a great feel for racing in a bowl. It’s a lot of fun to do that. It’s kind of an art.”
