The Triangle Red Cross has named Alexis Hicks of Raleigh its top High School Heroes award winner.

Alexis, a recent graduate of Broughton High School, received a $5,000 scholarship in honor of her fundraising efforts in the community. She raised $13,005 this year for the Red Cross, in part from a “Fling in the Spring” event that included three live bands, auctions, a raffle and a barbecue chicken dinner sale.

Six other local students were also named High School Heroes and received scholarship money. Aribah Shah was awarded $2,000; Austin Elias-DeJesus received $1,000; and David Kostenberger, Jessica Merdes, Ricky Lozano Chavez and Erin Klemp each received $500.
