RALEIGH — Saint Augustines announced the hiring of Tony Sheals as mens basketball coach Tuesday.
Sheals has coached at all levels for more than 20 years, including stops at Florida State, Bethune-Cookman, Towson and Delaware State. Sheals spent the past three seasons as an assistant at Florida A&M.
Sheals will take over a St. Aug team that finished 16-12 overall last season. Five players return from that squad.
NFHCA rankings: North Carolina was ranked first in the first preseason poll released by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association.
The Tar Heels garned 978 points and 33 first-place votes.
Maryland was second with 903 points and eight votes as the top team and third-place Princeton recieved 9 first-place votes. The Tigers totalled 883 points and were the only other school to garner first-place consideration from voters.
Duke was ranked 10th with 486 points.
No. 5 Syracuse (737 points), No. 7 Virginia (629) No. 18 Wake Forest (163), Boston College (146) also made the rankings from the ACC.
N.C. Central: Coach Vanessa Taylor announced the recruiting class for 2013-14, welcoming eight new faces to the program to join last seasons two returners, senior Tiffany Gary and sophomore Tisha Dixon.
Six true freshmen and three transfers join the Lady this season. Seven of the eight (Shiana Carrington, Tia Clement, Jessica Freeman, Jyla Hicks, Alexus Hynes, Morgan Jones and Rachel Williams) will be eligible to play immediately. Kristin Askew will have to sit out the 2013-14 season due to NCAA transfer rules.
