The leaders of the Wake County Republican Party have shown their complete disdain for public education by opposing the badly needed bond issue (“GOP rejects school bond” Aug. 22). This is a sad commentary on the state of the GOP’s local leaders.
It has not always been this way. In 1995, when I was chair of the Wake County Democratic Party, my GOP counterpart and I together recorded a series of radio commercials in support of a school bond referendum. We enjoyed working on the commercials, and set aside partisan differences to work cooperatively in the best interests of our county’s children. That bond issue was approved by the voters.
Many Republicans still believe in public education. Hopefully they will make their voices heard this fall, as they often have done in the past, and join with Democrats and Independents to support our children.
