FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — The Carolina RailHawks (3W-1D-1L, 10 pts) suffered a 1-0 loss to the Fort Lauderdale Strikers (3V-0E-2D, 9 pts) on Friday night, their first loss of the fall season.
Both clubs offered several chances in the opening minutes of the first half but nothing went into the net.
The RailHawks put pressure on the Strikers around the 20 minute mark, culminating in a missed shot from 8 yards out by Austin da Luz.
That opportunity in the 23rd minute would be their best chance of the half.
Fort Lauderdale swung momentum in their favor at the beginning of the second half when defender Darnell King found himself on the end of an Ivan Guerrero cross. King volleyed the shot past Akira Fitzgerald to put the Strikers ahead 1-0.
The RailHawks seemed poised to battle back for a draw with several attempts, including 2 blocked shots in stoppage time, but Fort Lauderdale’s backline remained tight throughout the entire 90 minutes and posted a clean sheet for the match.
The RailHawks return to NASL action Sept. 7 against the Tampa Bay Rowdies at Al Lang Stadium in St. Petersburg, Fla.
