Graham Zusi scored two minutes from time on Saturday to lift Sporting Kansas City to a vital 2-1 victory over the Colorado Rapids at Sporting Park.
Sporting Kansas City came into the match in poor form having dropped four of their last five league matches, but they were on the front foot early on and dominated possession for much of the first half.
The hosts finally found the opening strike in the 33rd minute when Benny Feilhaber when he blocked an attempted clearance from Colorado's Hendry Thomas and ripped it home on the volley from distance for his third goal of the season.
But the resilient Rapids answered 13 minutes from time with a bit of luck as Sporting defender Matt Besler directed it into his own net for the own goal.
However, the home side refused to let three points slip away as Zusi came to the rescue in the 88th minute, finishing off a superb passing sequence for his fifth tally of the year.
The result vaults Sporting back into a tie atop the Eastern Conference, while Colorado saw it nine-match unbeaten run come to an end.
