Chess club wins award in first contest

September 1, 2013

The Lacy Elementary School Chess Club won third place in its section in the Raleigh Chess Academy’s Team vs. Team interschool chess tournament at The Montessori School of Raleigh last spring.

The team members, none of whom had ever competed in a tournament before, were fourth-graders Jack Balint-Kurti, Pierce Densmore, Owen Julich and Gwynn Nowell and second-graders Will Hankins and Alexander Thomas.

The team practiced for its first tournament through weekly play, lectures and special practices using chess clocks.
