Durham Hillside held onto the top spot in the N&O high school football rankings during a week of extensive changes.

The Hornets defeated Southern Durham 29-24 Friday in front of a near-capacity crowd at Durham County Stadium.

Middle Creek’s dominating 56-14 win against Fayetteville E.E. Smith set off a slew of changes.

Middle Creek lost to Garner 21-16 in the first week, but Garner lost to Cleveland 45-44 Friday. Cleveland lost to Clayton 53-29 in the opener, but Clayton certainly didn’t appear to be a dominant team last week in its 16-14 win against Corinth Holders.

Leesville Road and Middle Creek moved up to Nos. 2 and 3 this week. Cardinal Gibbons, Heritage and Holly Springs moved out. Cary, Lee County and Cleveland moved in.
