From staff reportsSeptember 3, 2013

— The driver of a minivan was killed and her passenger injured when the vehicle and a Toyota RAV4 collided late Monday at Horton Road and Stadium Drive, police said.

Rubia Hernandez Portillo of Durham was driving the Ford minivan west on Horton Road when it crashed with the Toyota that Amina Baker of Durham was driving south on Stadium Drive shortly before midnight, investigators said.

Portillo, 30, was thrown from the Ford when it spun and overturned, according to police. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

A man who was riding with her was taken to a hospital, but police said his injuries did not appear to be life-threatening.

Baker, 17, was unhurt.

Police said Tuesday that they were continuing their investigation, but no charges were filed immediately.
