Regarding John Drescher’s Aug. 31 column “McCrory says we’re dumb”: In December 2001, Enron declared bankruptcy in what was to become one of the biggest financial scandals in U.S. history. Not long before entering bankruptcy and subsequently jail, Enron’s Chief Financial Officer Andrew Fastow, when questioned about some inconsistencies in Enron’s financial reports, told the audience members they were not smart enough to understand these complex financial operations.
Recently, Gov. Pat McCrory took a page from Fastow’s book and told an audience that a journalist was not smart enough to understand his economic policy. The residents of North Carolina can only hope that McCrory’s hubris doesn’t have a similar result.
