Rod O’Connor: Gossman supported women in church

September 10, 2013

Gossman’s view

With due respect to the writer of the Sept. 4 letter “Hearing Gossman,” he has done a disservice to Yonat Shimron. He suggests that the former N&O religion editor was less than objective in her reporting on Bishop Gossman’s favoring the ordination of women.

Actually, Shimron’s report was accurate. Bishop Gossman did favor the ordination of women in the Catholic Church. The letter-writer gives his own opinion that the issue of women’s ordination is, in his words, “discredited.” Not so. The issue is alive and well among the huge number of Catholics whom he apparently has never met.
