Paul Roger Ehrlich: Diplomacy should win out

September 12, 2013

Go with diplomacy

What a positive message it would send to the American people and the world if Congress actually heeded the will of the people and the president actually observed the Constitution and the War Powers Act and American bombs were not rained down upon innocent civilians in Syria.

It would not be a “loss of face” but create an even greater opening for diplomacy. We could begin redirecting resources that would have been wasted on war toward meeting humanitarian needs at home and abroad or reducing our debt.

Chemical weapons are awful but so is the indiscriminate death caused by bombs, Agent Orange and depleted uranium munitions that the U.S. has used. Syria has not attacked us, and attacking Syria would only increase terror and bloodshed. Wouldn’t it be nice if for once the narrow interests that profit from war didn’t get their way?
