Christy Flint: Just arm officers in schools

September 14, 2013

Arm only officers

I was glad to read that Gov. Pat McCrory’s Safer Schools Task Force has come out with the sound recommendation that only law enforcement officers carry weapons onto school campuses, echoing the same recommendation from Wake County public school system’s Task Force for Creating Safer Schools (“Report: Arm only school resource officers,” Sept. 8, Under the Dome.

What is disturbing is that Matt Scruggs, a school board candidate in District 2, favors arming teachers and administrators with weapons. This is an alarming idea, and one law enforcement officials are opposing. We don’t need more extreme views on the Wake County Board of Education.

I will be voting for Monika Johnson-Hostler in District 2. She is focusing on student academics and violence prevention, not escalation.
