The San Jose Earthquakes squandered an opportunity to inch closer to the playoffs on Saturday after the club was forced to settle for a scoreless draw with the Vancouver Whitecaps at Buck Shaw Stadium.
Both teams entered the match on 37 points, five behind Portland for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference, but neither side was able to create much in the way of scoring chances over the first 45 minutes.
After the break, the Earthquakes pushed the pace and had the better of the possession and scoring chances. The club's best chance came in the final moments when a corner kick was volleyed off the post from inside the penalty area, but neither side was able to find the back of the net.
The result sees the sides improve to 38 points, but they are still five points behind the Timbers, who drew Chivas USA on Saturday, for fifth place in the West with only a handful of matches remaining.
