Mike Reid: Raise minimum wage

September 17, 2013

Raise minimum wage

Trickle-down economics is a fairy tale that Republicans tell themselves so that they will not feel so bad about robbing the poor (unemployment reform) and giving to the rich (tax reform). Maybe someone should remind the Republicans that, mostly, the rich get rich by not spending their money. Not much trickle there.

A good way to stimulate the economy would be to raise the minimum wage. This would actually put more money in the hands of people who actually spend money.

More money being spent drives the demand for goods and services. An artificially low minimum wage depresses the economy and puts downward pressure on all other wages.

So a stagnant government creates stagnant wages, which creates a stagnant economy.

Am I the only one who finds it ironic that the Republicans have at every turn done their best to increase the stagnation here in North Carolina?
