Two charged with heroin trafficking as Wake deputies seize 2 kilograms

From staff reportsSeptember 20, 2013

— A man and woman from Georgia were arrested with 2 kilograms of heroin in the pair’s BMW outside a Comfort Inn hotel Thursday night.

Fernando Hurtado, 25, of 525 Parkway Circle South in Atlanta and Janely Yajaira Higuera-Cardenas, 26, 883 Wilton Lane Northwest in Lilburn, Ga., were each charged with two counts of trafficking in heroin and maintaining the 2006 BMW as a place to keep drugs.

Two kilograms is just under 4.5 pounds.

Cardenas was being held in lieu of $500,000 bail, and she and Hurtado were scheduled for court appearances Friday afternoon.

In an unusual aspect of the case, Wake County magistrates set cash bail for each of them eliminating the opportunity to use a bail bondsman.

Most suspects are given a secured bail, which lets someone post a percentage of the amount with a bondsman who then gives the court a promise for the whole amount if the suspect does not appear in court.
