Durham teen killed in traffic collision

From staff reportsSeptember 20, 2013

— A 16-year-old was killed late Friday afternoon after the car he was driving crossed the median and crashed into another car on N.C. 55, south of Riddle Road.

The accident happened shortly before 4:30 p.m. when a northbound 1997 Honda Civic driven by Tyreic Elyja Hemphill, of Durham, crossed into the path of a southbound 1990 Oldsmobile Delta 88 driven by Patrick Bailey, 36, of Durham.

Bailey hit his brakes, but was unable to avoid a collision, according to police. The front of the Oldsmobile hit the passenger side of the Civic and both vehicles went down an embankment.

Hemphill was trapped in his vehicle for several minutes before he was extricated by Durham firefighters. He was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Bailey was taken to the hospital for treatment of injuries that did not appear to be life-threatening, according to police spokeswoman Kammie Michael.

Speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the accident, Michael said.
