Elizabeth Annette Hartness and Jason Edward Spain were united in marriage on September 7, 2013 at four o'clock in the afternoon. The double ring ceremony took place at The Church of the Transfiguration in Bat Cave, NC. The Reverend Donald A Lowery, Rector of Church of The Holy Innocents in Henderson, NC, performed the ceremony. Music was provided by Mrs. Diane Nelson, organist of First Baptist Church, Forest City, NC.
The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Scott McCune Hartness of Henderson, NC. She is the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Blanton Hartness of Henderson and Mrs. Cynthia Hein Shaw and the late Keith David Shaw of Clayton, MO.
The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Frank Spain of Henderson. He is the grandson of Shirley Overton Clayton and the late Roger Calvin Clayton of Henderson and the late William Macy and Barbara Wortham Spain also of Henderson.
Escorted by her father and given in marriage by her parents, the bride wore the gown that was also worn by her grandmother, aunt and mother. Attending the bride as maid of honor was Elizabeth Nancy Drew of Raleigh, NC. Caroline Grace King of Rutherfordton, NC, was junior bridesmaid. Honorary bridesmaids were Maureen Clayton, Alissa English, Kimberly Ross, Rachel Seay and Allyson Snider of Raleigh, NC, Kathryn Blackburn and Perry Wester of Henderson, NC, Tricia Seitzer of Oxford, NC, Jenna Spain, sister of the groom, of Chapel Hill, NC, Honey Turner, cousin of the bride, of Villa Rica, GA, and Hunter Hartness, cousin of the bride, of Oxford, NC.
Edward Spain served as his son's best man. Ushers for the occasion were Dylan Ellington, cousin of the groom, of Henderson, NC, Sean Hartness, brother of the bride, also from Henderson, Eric Esdadt, of Mentor, OH, and Chris Savoia, of Chicago, IL, both friends of the groom.
Kathryn Blackburn served as Crucifer. Greg Taylor was the lector and chalice assistant and Tricia Seitzer was the Psalm reader.
Following the ceremony the bride's parents hosted a seated dinner and dance at The Lake Lure Inn and Spa in Lake Lure, NC. The groom's parents entertained guests after the rehearsal with dinner at Larkin's on the Lake in Lake Lure.
A bridal brunch was given by Susan Hartness, the bride's aunt and Ruth Hartness, the bride's grandmother in the Powers Room at the Inn. The bride chose this time to present her attendants with a gift of appreciation. On Sunday morning following the wedding, a brunch for guests was held in the Powers room. It was hosted by Crystal and Bill Leathers, aunt and uncle of the bride, Shirley and Al Hartness, aunt and uncle of the bride, and Ruth and Blanton Hartness, the bride's grandparents.
The bride attended Kerr-Vance Academy and is a graduate of North Carolina State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in program management with a minor in non-profit studies. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority.
The groom attended Kerr-Vance Academy and is a cum laude graduate of North Carolina State University with a degree in Civil Engineering. He was inducted into Chi Epsilon, an honorary engineering fraternity. He received his Juris Doctorate from the DePaul University College of Law in Chicago, IL, and earned a Masters Degree in International and European Business Law from Universidad Pontificia Comillas in Madrid, Spain.
The couple departed the festivities following the wedding under an archway of sparklers held aloft by wedding guests. Following a trip through the mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee the couple will reside in Raleigh.
