Georgia has easily been the most interesting team in college football, with three games against ranked teams. The Bulldogs opened the season with a three-point loss at Clemson on Aug. 31, beat South Carolina a week later and edged LSU by three points at home on Saturday.
For their efforts, I’ve got the one-loss Bulldogs at No. 5, ahead of unbeaten Ohio State (6), Louisville (8) and Florida State (9).
These are the kinds of dilemmas the selection committee will face with a four-team playoff coming in 2014. Should Georgia be punished for going outside the SEC and losing to Clemson on the road?
Should Ohio State be rewarded for beating Buffalo, San Diego State, Cal and Florida A&M? Can anyone really answer that question in a vacuum without politics shaping the debate?
The Buckeyes, by the way, should be tested this week with a road trip to Northwestern after a 31-24 tester at home against Wisconsin.
It might be a short stay, but welcome to the top 25, Maryland. The Terrapins’ 37-0 win over West Virginia last week suddenly looked a whole lot more impressive this week when the Mountaineers knocked off Oklahoma State, 30-21. As a reward, the Terps go to Florida State on Saturday.
