OXFORD — Police charged an Oxford man with murder Saturday after finding a live-in caretaker fatally stabbed at a home in the 200 block of King Street.
Davey Codell Allen, 42, of 921 Goshen St., was charged with first-degree murder. He is being held in the Granville County Jail without bail pending his first appearance in court Monday.
Allen is accused of stabbing Susie Ann Hester, 60, who lived and worked at the home. The woman Hester was looking after, 91-year-old Hattie Mitchell, was found unharmed in her bed.
According to a news release, police were asked to make a wellness check at the home. When they responded around 3 a.m., the officers could not get anyone to come to the door, police reported. They contacted a family member to come and let them in, police reported.
Hester was dead when officers found her, police reported.
Police arrested Allen a few hours later. They are still investigating the case and do not know at this time why Hester was killed, said Patricia Ford, a senior investigator with the Oxford Police Department.
An N.C. Department of Correction record search shows Allen was convicted in 2001 for robbery with a dangerous weapon and in 1993 for felony manslaughter. No additional details were available.
