Durham police seize cocaine, marijuana in drug arrests

From staff reportsOctober 8, 2013

— Police have seized 3.5 kilograms of cocaine and 3.3 kilograms of marijuana and charged three men in the cases, they said Tuesday.

On Friday, officers from the department’s Special Operations Division, which includes investigators, the Selective Enforcement Team and other units, arrested Simon Gonzalez, 41, and Guadalupe Garcia-Martinez, 48, who both live on North Hyde Park Avenue in Durham.

In the process, police spokeswoman Kammie Michael said, officers seized the kilograms of cocaine, equivalent to about 7.7 pounds and with a street value of $70,000, two guns and $14,000 in cash.

According to Durham County Jail records, Gonzalez was being held in lieu of $3 million bail.

State court records show he faces six counts of trafficking in cocaine, possession of drug paraphernalia, two counts of maintaining a place to keep drugs and felony conspiracy charges, and federal immigration officials asked that he be held so they could check his status in the United States.

Garcia-Martinez was being held in lieu of $500,000 on four counts of conspiring to traffic in cocaine.

Both are due in court on Oct. 28.

A day earlier, Michael said, officers charged Geoffrey Dnard Hansley, 30, of Dansey Circle with possessing marijuana with intent to sell or deliver it, possession of drug paraphernalia and maintaining a place to keep drugs.

In that arrest, Michael said, police seized 3.3 kilograms (about 7.3 pounds) of marijuana that has a street value of roughly $6,500.

Hansley was freed on $10,000 bail and given a Dec 5 court date.
