Tim Epperson: Protests must draw attention

October 8, 2013

Needed attention

Thanks for printing Marc Landry’s Oct. 2 column “Protesters should pay the price.” As an involved citizen who actually pays attention to what is going on in the N.C. legislature and as an active participant in the “theater” to which Landry refers, I find it refreshing to be reminded of why protest movements are necessary from time to time as a response to institutionalized political malfeasance supported by the misinformed.

Were this a nation of people meekly and unquestionably submitting to the occasional injustice inflicted upon a society (domestic or international) – by limiting their “protests” to behind closed doors or in the shadows – then I’m pretty sure we would still be a nation of Jim Crow laws while still at war in Vietnam.

And by the way, let’s not forget the “theater” of the Tea Party (Boston that is).
