Marine charged with murder in baby's death near Camp Lejeune

From staff reportsOctober 9, 2013

— A Marine from Camp Lejeune faces murder and other charges in the July death of an infant that he was taking care of for his girlfriend, Onslow County authorities said Monday night.

Lance Cpl. Matthew Scott Krause, 23, of 113 Spring Branch Lane in Maysville, was arrested Monday after sheriff’s investigators and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service got word from the State Medical Examiner’s Office that the 11-month-old had died from being shaken.

The baby died July 29 at a Greenville hospital after Onslow County medics had found the child unresponsive at Krause’s apartment the day before.

Krause, who has been in Navy custody in the brig at Camp Lejeune since the baby’s death, was charged with murder, negligent child abuse and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile through abuse and neglect, sheriff’s office Maj. Jon Lewis said in a statement.

Krause was scheduled for a court appearance Wednesday.
