Durham police investigators have arrested a man in connection with a January 2011 homicide on Canal Street.
Jimmie Lamont Harris Jr., 24, of Dowd Street was found shot to death in the 500 block of Canal Street shortly before 5 p.m. on Jan. 16, 2011. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A second victim – a 28-year-old man – also was shot and was taken to the hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
On Wednesday investigators arrested Ricky Lamar Rhodes, 21, of Durham on charges of conspiring to commit murder and assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury in connection with the homicide. He was also served with warrants charging him with conspiracy to traffic in heroin and possession of heroin with the intent to manufacture, sell or deliver.
Rhodes was brought to Durham from a federal prison in West Virginia, where he is serving time on federal drug and weapons charges.
Rhodes is the second person charged in connection with this case. In March 2013, Veshan M. Chambers, 24, was indicted on one charge of murder and one charge of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury.
Investigators said the fatal shooting of Harris did not appear to be a random act.
