South Korea Samsung Curved Smartphone

In this image released by Samsung Electronics Co., Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2013, its new Galaxy Round, the world’s first curved display smartphone is shown. With high anticipation for mobile devices with a flexible screen, Samsung Electronics says it is releasing a smartphone with a curved display in South Korea. Samsung said Wednesday the Galaxy Round has a 5.7-inch OLED screen with a vertical concave. It said the curve makes the device an easy grip despite its size.

Samsung says it will release a smartphone with a curved display — and a $1,000 price tag. The Galaxy Round has a curved 5.7-inch screen using display technology called organic light-emitting diode, or OLED, technology.

The Korean company says the curved screen smartphone is the first in the world, but the company did make the slightly curved Galaxy Nexus.

Samsung says the curved design makes it easier to hold. Granted, smartphones with curved backs like the Moto X are often praised for ergonomics, but a curved display brings a curious element to the equation. Will it be easier or more difficult to read or type on?

Currently the device is only available in South Korea. The no-contract price of 1.1 million won is about $1,003 U.S. dollars.
