It's not really that uncommon to see crossovers of popular TV shows and movies, but very seldom do we see something like the Marvel universe cross paths with a light-hearted kids' TV show. Still, considering how popular Marvel programming is on the Disney Channel, it was only a matter of time before they showed up in the world of Phineas and Ferb.
"Mission Marvel" does a pretty good job with the crossover idea, though it's really better suited for fans of "Phineas and Ferb," rather than the hardcore comic book readers. No matter, at least someone will enjoy it.
The story begins with Perry the Platypus once again putting a stop to the nefarious plans of the evil (yet dimwitted) Dr. Doofenshmirtz and his Power Draininator. However, it lets out one last gasp, bounces off a satellite (made by Phineas and Ferb from scratch, of course) and, by chance, takes away the powers of a quartet of Marvel's best heroes, including Iron Man, Spider-Man, Thor and The Incredible Hulk. Left powerless, they head to Phineas and Ferb's neighborhood to try and retrieve them. Meanwhile, Red Skull and his cronies - MODOK, Venom and Whiplash - plan to stop the heroes once and for all.
Those expecting a hardcore Marvel battle will be disappointed - this is Phineas and Ferb, after all. But this does set the stage for some good laughs from the crew, whether it's MODOK having trouble getting into a doorway or Red Skull getting pelted by waffles. The heroes have some fun as well, especially as Thor tries to explain how his Hammer works to Iron Man. Take it as a light-hearted tale and you'll have fun.
The DVD isn't too big on extras, but at least it looks nice. The animation is clean and fun to watch, and the voicework is quite good, even if none of the original "Avengers" actors are filling the roles. No matter. As for extras, there are no behind-the-scenes items to watch, but you can partake in some extra "Phineas and Ferb" episodes. You can't go wrong with those.
While "Mission Marvel" hardly counts as quintessential comic book entertainment - "The Avengers" it ain't - it's a good time for ":Phineas and Ferb" fans, or for those who always wondered what a Marvel villain looks like ringing a doorbell and running away. EVIL!
