High Point adopts concealed handguns in parks

Published: October 11, 2013

— High Point's City Council has amended an ordinance which will allow people with permits to carry concealed handguns to take them to the city's parks and recreation facilities.

The High Point Enterprise reports (http://bit.ly/16BOf7k) that the city council adopted the change this week to comply with a new state law that allows concealed-carry weapons in public recreation areas.

Under the change, concealed handguns are allowed at playgrounds and picnic shelters in city parks and on the city's greenway and golf courses and other recreation sites. But there are exceptions.

The law allows cities and counties to continue banning concealed firearms from public buildings, including recreation buildings at parks, swimming pools and athletic events organized by the city.

The city's ordinance still bans firearms other than legal concealed-carry weapons from parks.
