WASHINGTON — House Republicans are concerned the Obama administration's suspension of some U.S. aid to Egypt could undercut an ally in the midst of democratic transition and undermine U.S. interests.
In an internal document, House Armed Services Committee staff members outline several criticisms of the Obama administration's decision this week.
They say the administration hasn't set clear conditions for Egypt to recoup the money. And warn the government is weak and the aid cutoff could hamper the Egyptian economy and democracy-building efforts. The action, they add, could hurt the reputation of Egypt's military, a close U.S. partner, and prompt a reaction that hurts American interests.
The suspension affects planned deliveries of F-16 fighter jets, Apache helicopters, M1A1 tank kits, Harpoon missiles and $260 million in cash assistance.
