Rex tops Raleigh startup’s rankings of NC hospitals

Rex Hospital in Raleigh received the top score in new patient satisfaction rankings released this week by a Raleigh startup.

Axial Exchange’s Patient Engagement Index is designed to measure the quality of the interactions and care patients have with individual hospitals.

The index rates hospitals in three categories: personal health management, which includes electronic access to patient health records; patient satisfaction, which is based on public patient satisfaction data from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid; and social media engagement.

“The idea of patient engagement is a new buzzword and is hard to define,” said Joanne Rohde, CEO of Axial Exchange. “This index shines a spotlight in which health care facility does it well.”

This is the fifth year that Axial has released the index, but the first time it has evaluated North Carolina hospitals. It ranked 94 hospitals in the state. The highest score a hospital can receive in the Index is 100.

Rex, which is owned by UNC Health Care, topped the list with an overall score of 75, followed by Carolinas Medical Center-University in Charlotte and Novant Brunswick Medical Center in Wilmington.

University of North Carolina Hospitals finish tied for fifth with a score of 63.

“We provide a relationship-based care and we have patient family advisors to work with us on all sort of initiatives,” said Suzanne Heman, director of external affairs at UNC Hospitals. “It's really important to have the patients and their families' voices represented.”

Other Triangle hospitals that ranked in the top 25 included Duke Raleigh Hospital, Duke University Hospital and WakeMed Cary Hospital.
