DURHAM, N.C. — The site of four original slave quarters at Historic Stagville is opening up to the public.

On Saturday, Horton Grove will open for tours. It's the site of slave quarters built in 1851 and a 1770s farm house that was repurposed as an overseer's dwelling.

Another tour is planned for Hart House, a slave quarter that was modernized as a sharecropper's house in the early 20th century.

On Sunday, historian Joseph McGill is scheduled to give the Earlie E. Thorpe Memorial Lecture. McGill is sleeping in slave cabins along the East Coast, having already stayed in almost 40 slave dwellings in a dozen states. He's slated to spend a night in the Horton Grove quarters,

Thorpe was an African-American history scholar and a professor at N.C. Central University from 1962-1969.
