Thomas C. Jones: Stop horsing around, GOP

October 13, 2013

In an Oct. 7 letter, a writer accused President Obama of being on a “high horse” and recommended that he have lunch with the obstructionist congressional Republicans. She apparently slept through all of the times in Obama’s first term when he met frequently with Republican congressional members to discuss various issues to no avail. He did actually have some of them to lunch, but there was no reward for his efforts at compromise. It was their way or no way.

Now that the nation is facing a disastrous debt ceiling debacle, Republican tea partyers are holding the future of this country hostage due to their insistence on dismantling the Affordable Care Act – which was passed by Congress and approved by the U.S. Supreme Court. And this writer thinks Obama should just forget that and have a nice chat with them, which will lead to the same dead end while we all crash into financial cliffs?

I have a better idea. Why don’t the Republicans stop their horsing around and agree to a reasonable debt ceiling increase and end the sequester? Then everyone can sit down and discuss other matters with (perhaps) a level of sanity not yet in evidence.
